May 25, 2012: Right Whales and their Allies: the Canadian Stewardship Connection -- a CafĂ© Scientifique at the Canadian Museum of Nature    14 May 2012

Come listen to a engaging presentation by three speakers and share your opinions in a dynamic discussion about one of the most endangered whale species on the planet. With a population hovering around 450, North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) are increasingly threatened by the urbanization of the ocean where they feed, socialize, mate, migrate and give birth to their calves. Dr. Steve Cumbaa, researcher with the Canadian Museum of Nature, will describe the history of this speciesÂ’ decline, including the popular, but erroneous perception that marine resources are inexhaustible. Dr. Moira Brown, Senior Scientist at the New England Aquarium in Boston, will share her experiences studying these whales from biological and ecological perspectives, and her work rehabilitating them. Together with John Logan from Irving Oil, Dr. Brown will talk about recent signs of recovery in Canadian waters, thanks to conservation efforts and cooperation among corporations, scientists and government. Participants will then discuss the question: Can different industries take responsibility for the stewardship of marine life? Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and there is a cash bar. Registrations required: 613-566-4791.
